Comparison of mosquito nets: 5 types for the bed

Comparison of mosquito nets: A long-distance trip often carries the risk of contracting a mosquito-borne disease. This risk is significantly higher than in Germany. It is therefore particularly important to protect yourself from mosquitoes during long-distance travel – especially at night. It makes sense to compare mosquito nets before you travel so that you have the right mosquito net with you on your trip.

But even in Germany, mosquito protection for the bed is becoming increasingly important, as more and more invasive animal species (i.e. alien species that invade an ecosystem), including mosquito species, are spreading in the country. For a long time, tropical diseases were only a risk for long-distance travelers, but their vectors do not stop at borders. These immigrant mosquito species can transmit potentially dangerous diseases.

Mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit in Germany

The Asian tiger mosquito is spreading in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, for example, and carries Zika, West Nile and dengue viruses. Although most disease-causing viruses cannot (yet) survive in this country, the West Nile virus is already rampant in the Leipzig/Halle area and in southern Brandenburg. It can already overwinter here. Domestic mosquitoes of the genus Culex can also transmit tropical diseases if they are infected with the corresponding viruses. In the fall of 2019, three cases were reported for the first time in which people within Germany were infected with West Nile virus.

To effectively protect yourself from mosquitoes at night, the best option is to use an impregnated mosquito net as bed protection. There are different types of mosquito nets, all of which have their advantages and disadvantages. To help you choose the best mosquito net, we have created a table comparing all the relevant types.

Comparison of mosquito repellent for beds

The table compares self-supporting tents such as dome nets, dome tents and the MOSQUITO-SAFE with nets without poles such as the canopy net (pyramid net) and the box net. The self-supporting versions have poles. They are available with or without a base. They can easily be set up on the bed. Only the MOSQUITO-SAFE can be optimally adapted to the size of the mattress.

The nets without poles must be attached to 1 to 4 suspension points (depending on the version) to create a space above the bed that can be used for sleeping. The net can only be set up quickly if there are easily accessible suspension points. However, it is not possible to set up a net without poles if there are no accessible suspension points. In such cases, a net without poles cannot be used.

Mosquito nets with a base offer additional protection against creepy-crawlies such as scorpions, snakes and centipedes, as there is no gap between the bed and the net.

An additional zipper for getting in and out reliably prevents gaps from forming in the mesh that could be caused by careless movements during sleep. With a mosquito net with a zipper on both sides, everyone has their own entrance if the net is used by two people.

On round trips where different accommodation is used, it is helpful if the length and width of the mosquito repellent can be optimally adapted to the bed. This is only possible without restriction with a canopy net (pyramid net) and the MOSQUITO-SAFE. Dome tents and dome nets can only be erected in a fixed length and width. The box net can also be problematic if the bed is smaller than the net. Effective protection is only provided if the net is tucked under the mattress or rests on the floor. However, when it rests on the floor, everything on, in and under the bed is automatically inside the protected space and cannot be kept out.

If the net has a base, we recommend a skin-friendly fabric with cotton content that you can lie on directly to avoid having to take an extra sheet with you. The floor should be washable if necessary. The MOSQUITO-SAFE can be machine washed without any problems and has a harmless long-term impregnation that can withstand more than 100 washes and also protects against bedbugs. This means that bedbugs are no longer introduced into the suitcase via the net and then into your own home.
